Photographing a maternity session is always a profound experience, but when the mother-to-be is your sister-in-law, it takes on an even deeper meaning. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing Haley’s maternity session alongside my brother, Matt, and their golden retriever, Sammy. Haley had a clear vision for the session—something simple yet uniquely her own, breaking away from the more traditional maternity aesthetics.
Haley’s fashion choices were a perfect reflection of her style: effortless, elegant, and slightly unconventional. It was refreshing to see how she embraced her individuality, opting for pieces that were comfortable yet striking in their simplicity. Her vision allowed us to create images that felt personal and intimate, capturing the quiet anticipation of welcoming a new life.
The session was a blend of modern and timeless, as I shot with both my digital camera and my medium format film camera, loaded with Portra 400 film. There’s something magical about the way film captures light and texture, giving the photos a soft, nostalgic quality that complements the significance of the moment. The combination of digital and film allowed me to capture a wide range of emotions, from the joyful playfulness of Sammy running around to the serene moments of Haley cradling her baby bump.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is capturing the essence of a baby being born and the incredible strength and beauty of women. Maternity sessions are a celebration of life and the miracles that women carry within them. Photographing Haley was a reminder of this incredible journey, and I’m honored to have been a part of documenting this chapter in their lives. Each click of the shutter was a moment frozen in time, a testament to the love and anticipation that surrounded this growing family.
Captured on Pentax 645nii using Portra 400.
